The largest portion of the collection consists of the correspondence, 1824-1872, of Dr. Robert Eden Peyton (1804-1872) of "Gordonsdale," Fauquier County, Va., as a medical student at the University of Pennsylvania, and as administrator of the estate of his brother, Richard Henry Peyton, along with his land and legal records. Also, includes correspondence, 1826-1839, of Richard Henry Peyton (1811-1839) while a cadet at the U.S. Military Academy and while serving in the U.S. Army at Fort Word, La., and St. Marks, Fla., together with his legal records (in part concerning real estate development in Chattanooga, Tenn.) and estate records. The collection also includes correspondence, 1814-1827, and estate materials of Dr. Chandler Peyton (1769-1827) of "Gordonsdale," Fauquier County, Va.; and correspondence, 1791-1841, of his wife, Elizabeth Brown (Scott) Peyton (1773-1842), primarily with her sons. Also, includes correspondence, 1788-1813, accounts, land records (primarily concerning "Leesylvania" Prince William County, Va.), and estate materials of Charles Lee (1758-1815), attorney of Alexandria, Va., and U.S. Attorney General; and correspondence, 1815-1849, accounts, land and legal records of Walter Jones (1776-1861), attorney of Washington, D.C. Also present are correspondence, 1822-1867, accounts, financial, and legal records of Margaret Christian Peyton (1809-1881) of "Gordonsdale"; family and personal letters, 1851-1902, written to Anne Lee Peyton (1836-1919) of "Yelverton," Fauquier County, Va., along with an 1866 diary kept in Georgetown, D.C., and four commonplace books, 1850- 1903; and scattered materials of other members of the Peyton and related families.
